Chaomei Chen - Detecting Early Signs of Transformative Research

Associate Professor, College of Information Science and Technology, Drexel University, USA.

Transformative research is revolutionary. It fundamentally changes the intellectual structure of one or more existing fields of study and brings new directions to the course of development of fields involved. Transformative research is often characterized as highly creative, highly risky, and unpredictable. In this talk, I will address some of the fundamental issues concerning measuring, recognizing, and enhancing the potential of transformative research at an early stage. I will first introduce a theory to explain the underlying mechanisms shared by transformative research and then derive metrics that can be used to measure the transformative potential of a newly proposed idea in a scientific field. I will demonstrate some preliminary results of how this approach can be applied to the analysis and monitoring of ongoing scientific activities.
